The five signals, heaviest first
Every listing gets a composite score out of 100, built from five measured signals. Each pulls its own weight, and the weights add up to the full score.

Why sentiment carries the most weight
A star average is a blunt instrument. Two contractors can both sit on 4.3 stars while telling completely different stories underneath: one has scattered, unrelated gripes, the other has a run of recent reviews all pointing at the same problem, missed deadlines, a variation that blew out the budget, poor tidy-up on site. Averages flatten that difference out. Reading what people actually wrote is the only way to catch a pattern before it becomes your problem. That's why sentiment, our synthesis of recent review themes, is weighted above the star rating itself. We summarise these themes rather than republish review text, and we always link back to Google so you can read the source and form your own view.
Why the other signals matter
Rating still counts for a lot, 26%, because it's the simplest signal customers actually leave behind and it's hard to fake at scale. Volume matters because a contractor with 200 reviews and a solid track record is a safer bet than one with four glowing ones from last year; we log-scale this so a handful of reviews can't outrank genuine, sustained trade. Recency matters because renovation businesses change: crews turn over, ownership changes, quality drifts either direction. A contractor reviewed heavily in 2019 and rarely since tells you less than one with a steady flow of reviews this year. Completeness rounds it out at 16%: a contractor who keeps their phone number, website, hours and address accurate and easy to find is generally easier and safer to deal with than one who doesn't bother.
The honest limits
Businesses with few recent reviews don't get penalised into obscurity, but they do get flagged. Where the review count or recency is too thin to support real confidence, we label that listing low-confidence so you know to weigh it accordingly. We also don't control what businesses get reviewed or when, so the score is only ever as fresh as the public data behind it.
Scores are earned, not edited
Scores come from this rubric and this data, full stop. Nobody adjusts a number because a business asks, advertises, or complains. Where paid placement exists anywhere on this site, it is labelled clearly as paid and it never touches the score. If any list on this site involved editorial judgment in its picks or ordering, that involvement is disclosed on that page. Otherwise, what you see is the rubric, applied.
